Day 1: Begin of Tour Medan/Kuala Namu (Sumatra) - Berastagi (D)
Sumatra RainforestAfter landing at Medan airport, you will be welcomed by your personal tour guide. Immediately start your trip to Berastagi. On the way, visit the Karo Batak village of Dokan with its traditional buildings. Finally, you reach Berastagi. The picturesque little town is located in the middle of the homeland of the Karo Batak, known for its fruit market.
Day 2: Berastagi - Parapat - Samosir (B/L)
Lake TobaBreakfast at the hotel. Afterward, drive along extensive vegetable and fruit fields to Parapat, a resort directly on the banks of Lake Tobase. On the way, you can see the waterfall of Sipisopiso, as it plunges from a height of 80 meters into the gorge. From the viewpoint, you can also enjoy the view over the lake from the north shore. Framed by green hills and sparkling water in the tropical sun, Lake Toba is one of the most famous sights in Indonesia. Created by a massive volcanic eruption around 75,000 years ago, it is now the largest crater lake in the world. Take the ferry to the island of Samosir.
Day 3: Samosir (B/L)
Huta Siallagan, SamosirToday you will explore the island of Samosir, where there are still traces of megalithic culture to discover in many places. In Tomok on the East Coast, visit the tomb of King Sidabutar and selected family members. The stone graves are partly decorated with human figures. Sidabutar is also guarded by two elephants. There are also Christian influences on some graves. In the immediate vicinity are traditional Batak houses with the typical curved roofs. Further north lies the town of Ambarita. There you will visit Huta Siallangan. King Laga Siallagan founded the fortified settlement and the following generations have further expanded the village. Today, you can still see the typical Bolon houses and Sopo rice storage in the open-air museum. In the shade of a large tree stands a stone table surrounded by several chairs and benches. There, the ruler consulted with representatives of the village. Among other things, law was also pronounced and in part executed immediately. You can still see the Schand Block and the stone block today. Later you will see a dance performance of the Toba Batak. Return to the accommodation. Overnight on Samosir.
Day 4: Samosir - Parapat - Medan (B/D)
You leave the island of Samosir and drive to Balige. There they see clothes and woodwork of the Batak. You will also visit a Batak village and the market in Jangga Dolok.
Day 5: Medan - End of Tour Medan/Kuala Namu (Sumatra) (B)
Mesjid Raja in MedanBefore you start your return trip, you will see the sights of the provincial capital, Medan as part of a city tour. The Maimoon Palace, built in 1888, is the former residence of the Sultan of Deli. The great mosque of 1906 is one of the most sublime mosques in Indonesia. On the same property there is a cemetery where several sultans of Deli and numerous members of the native nobility could be buried.

Important information for traveler: Outside of highly touristic regions like Bali there is only a limited touristic infrastructure available. Regular flight connections, restaurants and hotels (all classes from simple to high end) are limited. Flight cancellations and delays are quite common. Please don't expect amenities like warm water, air-conditioning and even comfortable beds at all hotels and homestays during the round trip. This applies especially outside of bigger cities.
