Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Begin of Tour Denpasar (Bali) - Kuta

Sunset Kuta Beach © Christian AbelsSunset Kuta BeachArrival at the international airport of Bali and transfer to Hotel in Kuta. The rest of the day is free at leisure. Walk to the nearby restaurants and shops or relax before you start your round trip. You will explore the Lesser Sunda Islands. The archipelago spans over 1,400km and includes all islands between Bali in the West and Timor in the East.

Day 2: Kuta (B)

Rice terrace BaliRice terrace BaliToday is free at leisure. Spend the day getting to know the surroundings of the resort or explore the Bali countryside. Optional day trip to see hinduistic temples and rice paddies. Overnight in Kuta.

Day 3: Kuta - Waingapu (B/L/D)

Traditional House, SumbaTraditional House, SumbaBreakfast at the hotel. Later transfer to the airport and flight to Waingapu on the island of Sumba. You will meet your personal English-speaking guide and transfer to hotel in the city. After lunch you will drive to Melolo. The region is known for traditional architecture and megalitic structures. Later return to Waingapu. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Waingapu (B/L/D)

Ikat, SumbaIkat, SumbaBreakfast at hotel. In the morning drive again to Melolo region. You will visit Prailiang, Pau, and Rende. Learn more about the local ikat fabrics with characteristic pattern. It takes a week to finish this kind of handiwork. Ikat is very important in Sumbanese culture and society. It is used as a bridal gift or a present to welcome honored guests. Later you will viit the villages Mangili and Kaliuda. Resturn to Waigapu inthe afternoon. Dinner and oernight in Waingapu.

Day 5: Waingapu - Waikabubak (B/L/D)

Stone Statue SumbaStone Statue SumbaLeave Waongapir for Waikabubak after breakfast. On the way to the West-Sumbanese capital stop in Anakalang. See the royal tombs just at the side of the road. The stone graves are adorned with beautiful figural representations of animals to show the power of the local mornarchs buried here. Visit the traditional villages of the region after lunch. You can still find traditonal houses with steep, gras thatched roofs. Fter visit of the local market transfer to Waikabubak.

Day 6: Waikabubak (B/L/D)

Traditional House, SumbaTraditional House, SumbaStart exploreing the western part of Sumba today. The Kodi district is best known for traditional houses. Travellers are only allowed to visit the kabisu family groups on invitation by the kepala desa and consultation with the ancestors. Return to Waikabubak in the afternoon. Overnight in Waikabubak.

Day 7: Waikabubak - Tambolaka - Kupang (B/L/D)

Breakfast at the hotel. Flight from Tambolaka to Kupang later in the morning. Airport transfer to your city hotel. Overnight in Kupang

Day 8: Kupang - Ende - Moni (B/L/D)

The trade with exotic spices drew them to the region. Upon arrival in Ende meet with your local guide and drive to Moni. Pass by picturesque villages in the highlands. Nua Bosi, Wolo and Wologai are known for their traditional houses and art. Arrival in Moni during the afternoon.

Day 9: Moni - Kelimutu - Bajawa (B/L/D)

One of the 3 Coloured Lakes of KelimutuOne of the 3 Coloured Lakes of KelimutuLeave the guesthouse long before sunrise (04:00 hrs) and drive to the Kelimutu volcano. The tri-coloured lakes in the crater are a sight to behold. Walk 1,5km to the volcano and climb the 127 steps to the crater. At the moment the lakes are turquoise, olive and black. According to the records of a dutch geologist they were red, blue and white in 1914. Leave the summit after sunrise an retzrn to the guesthouse in Moni. Visit the lionese houses in Kowanara on the way to Bajawa. Lunch en route. Arrival in Bajawa inthe afternoon.

Day 10: Bajawa (B/L/D)

Hot Springs, FloresHot Springs, FloresStart the day with an excursion to the twin lakes in Wawo Muda and the local market. Drive on to the hot springs near Soa. Relax in the warm water before you return to Bajawa.

Day 11: Bajawa - Ruteng (B/L/D)

The villagers are mostly roman catholic but you can still find megaliths surounded by adta houses. Ngadhu steles represent the male ancestors while bhaga shrines represent the female ancestors. Drive in to Ruteng and see the volcano Mount Inierie (Inerie) on the way. Ruteng ist the capital of Manggarai district. En route stop at Ranamese Lake.

Day 12: Ruteng - Labuan Bajo (B/L/D)

Rice Paddies are also common outside BaliRice Paddies are also common outside BaliRuteng is a small town in the Flores countryside, right next to the Ruteng Nature Conservation Park. The park is home to the bare-throated whistler (Pachycephala nudigula) or Ngkiong in the local tongue. A small singing bird endemic to the island. It is worth to visit the Park early in the morning to hear them sing (if there is no rain and strong winds). There is also a young volcano in the park area. The Anak Ranakah (Child of Ranakah) emereged during an eruption in 1987. En route to Labuan Bajo stop at Cara village in Cancar area to see the Lingko a rice field in the shape of a spider web. It is probably the only rice field of this kind in the world. Arrival in Labuan Bajo late in the afternoon.

Day 13: Labuan Bajo - Rinca (B/L/D)

Upon arrival in Rinca, walk along the trails and look out for the famous komodo dragons. Lunch and Dinner on board.

Day 14: Rinca - Komodo - Labuan Bajo (B/L/D)

On the way to Labuan Bajo stop at Pantai Merah. The beach is known for ist pink colour and crystal clear water, inviting you to swim and relax. Stay there until the afternoon. Return to Labuan Bajo. Overnight at Labuan Bajo.

Day 15: Labuan Bajo - Denpasar - Kuta (B)

Market © Christopher MisslingMarketBreakfast at the hotel. The morning is free at leisure. Depending on flight connection you can visit the Batu Cermin cave. The stalactite cave is home to scary looking amblypygids and other insects. There is also the fossil of a Coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis) visible in the cave walls. Afterwards transfer to Komodo Airport and return to Bali. Upon arrival in Bali you will be transfered to you hotel in Kuta.

Day 16: Kuta - End of Tour Denpasar (Bali) (B)

Breakfast at hotel. Day is free at leisure until airport transfer.

Important information for traveler: Outside of highly touristic regions like Bali there is only a limited touristic infrastructure available. Regular flight connections, restaurants and hotels (all classes from simple to high end) are limited. Flight cancellations and delays are quite common. Please don't expect amenities like warm water, air-conditioning and even comfortable beds at all hotels and homestays during the round trip. This applies especially outside of bigger cities.
