Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Begin of Tour Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) - Kota Kinabalu

Your guide will help you with the check-in. The afternoon is free at leisure. You can explore the night market or the restaurants near the hotel (optional). Overnight in Kota Kinabalu.

Day 2: Kota Kinabalu - Kinabalu Nationalpark (B/L/D)

Mount Kinabalu in SabahMount Kinabalu in SabahLeave Kota Kinabalu after breakfast and drive to the hot springs of Poring. It will take approximately 2 hours to cross the Crocker Range with green paddy fields and Dusun villages. The hot springs in Poring were discovered by Japanese soldiers during WWII. You can explore the jungle following a canopy walk between the treetops in a height of 41m. Lunch at park cafeteria. The Kinabalu National Park was established in 1964 and part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2000. The park on the foothills of Mount Kinabalu comprises several vegetation zones. Dinner and overnight at the national park.

Day 3: Kinabalu Nationalpark - Sepilok (B/L/D)

There is an education Center and the botanical garden including orchids, flowering rhododendrons, ferns and pitcher plants. Walk through the rainforest and learn more about the different plants. After lunch, drive to Sepilok orang-utans rehabilitation center near Sandakan. The drive will take 4-5 hours. The Sepilok Nature Resort is just next to the famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. It is one of the biggest rehabilitation centers for orang-utans and other forest animals. Afternoon at your leisure. Night walk or other resort activities optional. Dinner and overnight at the resort.

Day 4: Sepilok (B/L/D)

The center was established in 1964 at Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orang-utans as well as dozens of other wildlife species. Today, 60 - 80 orangutans live on the premises. In 2014 an orangutan nursery was added to the center. You will start the visit at Sepilok with a walk along the plank way to reach the feeding platform. Daily feeding starts at 10:00 AM. Take your time and watch the orangutans interact. Afterward, drive to the neighboring Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, which aims to raise public awareness about the plight of the Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) and to raise conservation awareness about this species. You can watch the sun bears in their outdoor habitat from an observation platform. Later lunch at a local restaurant. Afterward visit of the Rainforest Discovery Center at Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. The education center was founded in 1996 and provides information on the importance of the rainforest as a biotope. Many walkways run through the forest reserve and make it easy to explore. You can follow a canopy walk amidst the treetops and see some of the endemic bird species. Transfer to the resort in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the resort.

Day 5: Sepilok - Sandakan - Abai (B/L/D)

Orang-Utan BorneoOrang-Utan BorneoBreakfast at the resort. The morning is free at your leisure. Check-out and drive to Sandakan jetty. Take a boat to Abai village. The cruise up to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary will take 1 hour. The journey starts at Sandakan town, crosses the Sulu Sea and continues along the mangrove forest. Check-in at Abai Jungle Lodge. Lunch will be served at the restaurant. Late in the afternoon, you will go on a second cruise along the river. Explore animal live at the river banks until night falls. The fire flies in the trees near the village can only be seen in the dark. Return to the lodge for dinner. Afterward you can go for a walk along the nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other nocturnal wildlife. Overnight at Lodge.

Day 6: Abai - Pitas Lake - Abai (B/L/D)

The lake is a naturally formed oxbow lake created by the meandering Kinabatangan river. Return to the loge for breakfast. The morning is free at your leisure. You are invited to enjoy a simple home cooked lunch provided by the people of Abai. The afternoon is free at your leisure to explore the plan walks around the lodge. Silver leaf monkeys, birds and even wild orangutans can be seen in the trees. Leave for another cruise along the river in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Day 7: Abai - Sukau (B/L/D)

Proboscis monkeyProboscis monkeyFree time after breakfast. Leave for Sukau after lunch. The boat ride will take several hours. You can watch out for proboscis monkeys, hornbill and other animals along the ride. Check-in at the lodge in Sukau. Late in the afternoon, another boat ride to Menanggul River near the lodge to watch out for more animals. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 8: Sukau - Oxbow Lake - Sukau (B/L/D)

Return to the lodge for breakfast. After lunch, go for another boat ride and have a chance to see pygmy elephants. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 9: Sukau - End of Tour Lahad Datu (Sabah) (B)

Breakfast at the lodge and return to Sandakan or transfer to Lahad Datu for additional program at Tabin Wildlife Reserve or Danum Valley.
